The Meta Pixel reports what shoppers do on your Shopify store from their browser. The Conversions API (CAPI) sends the same events from a server, so fewer get lost to ad blockers and browser limits. Run both through Meta's own Facebook & Instagram app for Shopify, and Meta gets cleaner signals to optimise on.
Even then, Ads Manager won't match your Shopify orders exactly. This guide is for Indian D2C founders and marketing heads wondering which dashboard to believe.
What do the Meta Pixel and the Conversions API each do?
The Pixel tracks actions on your website (viewing a product, adding to cart, buying) from the shopper's browser. Meta uses these "events" to find likely buyers, build retargeting audiences and credit sales to ads. Because it runs in the browser, it can be blocked: Meta's help pages say the Pixel may not fire when someone uses an ad blocker (checked on 3 November 2026).
The Conversions API sends events from a server straight to Meta, which Meta describes as more resilient to browser limits and ad blockers. It doesn't replace the Pixel. You run both, and CAPI fills the gaps. On Shopify you don't build it yourself: Meta lists Shopify as a partner integration where CAPI takes a few clicks at no extra cost (checked on 3 November 2026).
Why don't Ads Manager numbers match Shopify?
Because they count different things. Shopify counts every order. Ads Manager counts only orders Meta can connect to someone who saw or clicked your ad, under the rules you've set.
| Reason | What happens | Effect on Meta's number |
|---|---|---|
| Attribution window | A sale is credited only within a set time after a click or view. The default for new ad sets is 7-day click or 1-day view (checked on 3 November 2026). | Up or down |
| View-through | Someone sees an ad, doesn't click, buys later. Meta can credit the ad; Shopify won't. | Higher |
| Reporting date | Ads Manager reports against the ad impression date; Shopify uses the order date. | Shifts days |
| Ad blockers | The Pixel doesn't fire. CAPI recovers some of these. | Lower |
| iOS privacy | Apple's rules on iOS 14.5 and later limit data; Meta uses Aggregated Event Measurement for limited measurement. | Lower or modelled |
| Consent | No consent, or a banner not synced with Shopify, means fewer events. | Lower |
| Duplicates | Pixel and CAPI both send a purchase and Meta can't match them. | Higher |
| Other channels | Shopify includes Google, email, WhatsApp, influencer and repeat orders. | Shopify higher |
| COD and RTO | The Purchase event fires when the order is placed. A refused COD parcel stays counted. | Higher than delivered revenue |
The last row hurts Indian brands most. Our guide to ROAS and break-even ROAS shows how GST and RTO inflate the ROAS in Ads Manager.

What is deduplication, and why does event_id matter?
Deduplication means Meta counts one purchase once, even when it arrives from both the Pixel and CAPI. Meta matches the two copies when (checked on 3 November 2026):
- event_name (for example, Purchase) is the same in both, and
- event_id is identical in both. An order number is a common choice.
Meta's developer docs say that if matching events arrive within 48 hours of each other, it keeps one. Without an event_id, it can try matching on external_id or the fbp browser ID.
Meta's help pages say partner integrations such as Shopify handle these parameters automatically. Your job is to check it works. It usually breaks when a second, hand-added Pixel or an old tracking app keeps firing alongside the official connection.
What is Event Match Quality?
Event Match Quality (EMQ) is a 0–10 score in Events Manager showing how well the customer details sent with your server events match Meta accounts. It's calculated from the last 48 hours of website events sent through CAPI (checked on 3 November 2026). Better matching means more sales tied back to ads.
Meta rates email and click ID as high priority; phone, external ID, browser ID and country as medium; and name, city and PIN code as low. On Shopify, your data-sharing level decides how much of this is sent. Meta's terms require you to have the lawful right and any necessary consent to share it, and to hash contact details as its documentation describes.
How do you set it up on Shopify?
Use Meta's official sales channel app, Facebook & Instagram by Meta. These steps follow Meta Business Help Center and Shopify Help Center pages (checked on 3 November 2026). Labels change, so go with what your admin shows.
Before you start:
- A Shopify store on the Basic plan or higher, not password protected
- A Facebook Page owned by your Meta business portfolio, with admin access
- Old Pixel code and extra tracking apps removed, so nothing fires twice
1. Install the channel. In Shopify admin, go to Sales channels, add Facebook & Instagram and add it as a sales channel.
2. Connect Meta. Click Start setup, log in with Facebook, choose your business portfolio, Page, ad account and Pixel, and accept the terms.
3. Turn on data sharing. In the channel, open Settings, then Data sharing settings. Turn on customer data sharing and pick a level:
| Level | What it uses | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Pixel only | Ad blockers can stop it; no CAPI |
| Enhanced | Pixel + Conversions API | Shares customer information to help matching |
| Maximum | Pixel + Conversions API | Shares the most, such as name, location, email and phone |
Meta's Shopify guide says to select Enhanced or Maximum.
4. Set data access. In Shopify admin, go to Settings, then Customer events, and open the Facebook & Instagram pixel. Optimized is the default and lets Shopify pause data it judges unnecessary; Always on keeps it flowing. Meta recommends Always on for the most reliable performance.
5. Test. In Meta Events Manager, use the Test events tool and place a test order. Check the Purchase arrives from browser and server, shows as deduplicated and carries the right INR value.
6. Compare. Match a week of Purchase events with Shopify orders. Far more in Meta usually means a second Pixel.
If your theme, checkout or apps are customised, our Shopify development team can review the setup.
What about consent and India's DPDP Act?
India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 is built around clear notice and consent for using personal data. Its Rules were notified in November 2025, with most obligations phasing in after that (checked on 3 November 2026). This isn't legal advice; ask your lawyer what applies to you.
In practice: name the Pixel and Conversions API in your privacy policy, use Shopify's customer privacy settings or a consent app that syncs with Shopify's Customer Privacy API (Shopify notes pixels may not behave correctly if consent isn't synced), and accept that some events won't reach Meta. For skincare and cosmetics brands collecting phone numbers for COD confirmation and WhatsApp updates, say clearly at checkout how those numbers are used.
A monthly tracking check
Run this monthly, and before Diwali or end-of-season sales:
- Purchase events in Events Manager roughly track Shopify orders
- Purchases show as deduplicated
- Event Match Quality for Purchase hasn't dropped
- Data sharing is still Enhanced or Maximum
- No new app has added a second Pixel
- Ad revenue is compared with delivered, ex-GST revenue
If Shopify shows orders but Ads Manager shows none, tracking is broken. It's one of the first checks in why a Shopify store gets no sales.
FAQs
Do I need both the Meta Pixel and the Conversions API on Shopify?
Yes, for most stores. The Pixel tracks browser activity and CAPI sends events from the server, so fewer are lost. On Shopify, the Enhanced and Maximum data-sharing levels turn on both.
Is the Facebook Pixel the same as the Meta Pixel?
Yes. Facebook Pixel is the older name, from before Facebook's parent company became Meta. It's the same tool.
Why does Ads Manager show more purchases than Shopify?
Usually view-through attribution, duplicate events from a second Pixel or old app, or COD orders later returned to origin. Check deduplication in Events Manager and compare with delivered orders.
Why does Ads Manager show fewer purchases than Shopify?
Shopify counts every order, including organic and repeat buyers. Ads Manager counts only ad-attributed sales within your window. Ad blockers, iOS limits and missing consent also reduce what Meta sees.
What is a good Event Match Quality score?
Meta scores it from 0 to 10; higher means more events matched. Follow the recommendations Events Manager gives, rather than chasing a number.
Does the Shopify integration handle deduplication automatically?
Meta's help pages say partner integrations such as Shopify do. Still confirm it with the Test events tool, especially if other tracking apps are installed.
