Cart Abandonment in India: Why Shoppers Leave and How to Win Them Back

Why Indian shoppers add to cart but don't buy, how to fix cart abandonment on Shopify, and how to win them back with email, WhatsApp, SMS and ads.

"People add to cart, then leave." If that's what your store keeps telling you, you're looking at cart abandonment: a shopper adds products to the cart or starts checkout, then goes without paying. Much of it is fixable friction, and in India it looks familiar: a shipping charge that appears at the last step, no cash on delivery, an OTP that never arrives, a failed UPI payment or a delivery date that's too far away.

Fix the reasons people leave, then follow up, with consent, with those who still drop off. This post covers both for Shopify stores selling skincare, cosmetics, perfume, jewellery, fashion and bags.

Is it cart abandonment or checkout abandonment?

They're two stages of the same leak, and you recover them differently.

Stage What you know about the shopper How you can follow up
Cart abandonment (never reached checkout) Usually nothing, unless they're logged in or subscribed Retargeting ads; messages only if they've already opted in
Checkout abandonment (started checkout, didn't pay) The email or phone number they typed in Shopify's abandoned checkout reminders, plus consented WhatsApp or SMS

Shopify lists checkouts that were started but not completed under Orders > Abandoned checkouts (Shopify Help Center, checked on 3 November 2026). Not sure the problem is abandonment rather than traffic? Start with our checklist for a Shopify store with no sales.

Why do Indian shoppers add to cart but not buy?

Usually because checkout didn't match what they expected, or paying felt risky or difficult.

  • Surprise shipping costs. The product looked like ₹799. At checkout it's ₹799 plus shipping plus a COD fee.
  • No COD, or COD hidden. Many first-time buyers won't pay upfront to a brand they haven't tried.
  • OTP and login friction. Forced account creation or a slow OTP gives a shopper time to reconsider.
  • UPI payment failures. A request times out, the app switch fails, or money is debited but no order appears. Shoppers unsure whether they've been charged often don't retry.
  • Slow or unclear delivery. "5–7 business days" loses to a marketplace that says "tomorrow". No date at all is worse.
  • Low trust. No reviews, no return policy, no contact details. This matters more for higher-priced perfume and jewellery.
  • Just browsing. Some wait for payday or a festive sale. Don't pressure them.

How do you fix it on the product page?

Answer the checkout questions before the shopper gets there.

  • Show the full price early. Say the price includes GST, and show shipping or the free-shipping threshold on the product page and in the cart.
  • Add a PIN code checker that says "COD available, delivered by Thursday".
  • Make the product clear. For skincare brands, ingredients and skin-type guidance. For perfume brands, notes, how long it lasts in plain words, and a sample or discovery set.
  • Show real proof. Reviews and customer or creator content (with permission). Our guide to UGC for Indian brands covers how to collect it.
  • State the return policy in a line near the add-to-cart button.

How do you fix the cart and checkout?

Make checkout short, familiar and predictable. Most of this is settings and app choices on your existing store, the kind of work our Shopify development team does.

  • Guest checkout allowed; no account needed to buy
  • Phone OTP, if used, is fast, with a resend option and a fallback
  • Shipping and any COD fee shown in the cart, before checkout
  • UPI clearly visible, alongside cards, net banking and wallets
  • A clear message and a retry option when a payment fails
  • COD offered where you can deliver, with any limits explained
  • Split address fields (flat, building, street, landmark, PIN code)
  • A delivery date at checkout, not just "5–7 days"
  • Checkout tested on a mid-range Android phone on mobile data

On COD, avoid both extremes. Offering it everywhere can raise RTO; removing it can raise abandonment. Our post on COD, RTO and how D2C brands cut returns explains how to keep COD while filtering risky orders. For what checkout apps and plans cost, see our guide to Shopify pricing in India.

How do you win back shoppers who abandoned checkout?

Remind them soon, make returning one tap, and only message people through channels they've agreed to.

1. Shopify's abandoned checkout email

Shopify's current version is an abandoned checkout automation, created from the Recover abandoned checkout template in the Shopify Messaging app (Apps > Messaging > Automations). Per the Shopify Help Center, checked on 3 November 2026:

  • The default template emails customers 10 hours after they reach checkout without ordering. You can change timing and steps in Shopify Flow.
  • By default it only goes to customers subscribed to email marketing. You can widen the "To" field to all customers, but check your privacy policy and consent wording first.
  • You can edit the subject, content and sender, and add a discount code.
  • It covers the Online Store and Buy Button channels, not POS or third-party channels.
  • Switching to the new automation is permanent; you can't return to the legacy email.

You can also send a one-off recovery email from a single abandoned checkout, but only to its owner: anyone with the link can continue the checkout.

A sequence to test (a hypothesis, not a benchmark): one helpful reminder a few hours after abandonment with the cart, delivery date and COD availability, and one the next day. Hold any discount for the second message, or skip it, so shoppers don't learn to abandon on purpose.

2. WhatsApp and SMS reminders

Many Indian shoppers read WhatsApp before email, but it has the strictest rules.

  • WhatsApp needs opt-in. Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform requires opt-in before you send template messages, naming your business and what you'll send. Outside 24 hours from the customer's last message, you can only send pre-approved templates, and marketing templates have per-user limits (Meta for Developers, checked on 3 November 2026).
  • Shopify can send it. The Shopify Messaging automation can also use SMS or WhatsApp. Those messages are charged, WhatsApp templates need Meta's approval, and WhatsApp marketing only goes to customers who explicitly opted in (Shopify Help Center, checked on 3 November 2026).
  • SMS in India needs DLT. Commercial SMS must use a registered header and content templates on the DLT platform under TRAI's rules (trai.gov.in, checked on 3 November 2026).

Use an unticked WhatsApp opt-in box at checkout with a clear line on what you'll send, and make opting out easy. If shoppers ask questions in your Instagram DMs, automated replies should run on Meta's official Instagram API, with a person taking over when needed. Our marketing automation team sets up email, WhatsApp and DM flows with consent built in.

3. Retargeting ads

Retargeting reaches people who added to cart but never gave contact details. On Meta, Advantage+ catalog ads can show people products they viewed or added to cart on your website, using your Meta Pixel and product catalogue (Meta Business Help Center, checked on 3 November 2026).

  • Keep the window short and the frequency sensible.
  • Exclude recent buyers.
  • Judge retargeting on delivered revenue, especially when recovered orders are COD. Our post on ROAS and break-even ROAS shows how.

Our performance marketing team runs retargeting this way.

What should you measure?

Track these monthly against your own trend, not an industry average:

  • Add-to-cart, reached-checkout and purchase rates (Shopify Analytics)
  • Checkouts recovered, from the automation report
  • Payment failures by method, from your payment gateway
  • RTO on recovered COD orders

Test checkout and reminder flows before Diwali and wedding season, not during the rush.

FAQs

What is cart abandonment?

It's when a shopper adds products to their cart but leaves without buying. Checkout abandonment is the later stage: they started checkout but didn't pay.

Why do people add to cart but not purchase?

In India the common reasons are unexpected shipping or COD charges, no COD, forced login or slow OTPs, failed UPI payments, unclear delivery dates and low trust in a new brand. Some are simply browsing.

How do I set up abandoned checkout emails on Shopify?

Go to Apps > Messaging > Automations and create an automation from the Recover abandoned checkout template. By default it emails subscribed customers 10 hours after they abandon checkout, and you can change timing in Shopify Flow (checked on 3 November 2026).

Can I send abandoned cart reminders on WhatsApp?

Yes, if the customer has opted in to WhatsApp messages from you. Outside 24 hours from their last message, you can only send Meta-approved templates, usually for a per-message charge.

Should I offer a discount in abandoned cart messages?

Not by default. Start with a helpful reminder; if you test a discount, keep it for a later message.

Does offering COD reduce cart abandonment?

It often helps first-time buyers order, but can raise RTO. Keep COD, show it early, and manage the risk with prepaid nudges.
