D2C Growth & Strategy

Shopify vs WooCommerce for Indian D2C Brands (2026)

Shopify vs WooCommerce for Indian D2C brands: costs in INR, ease of use, control, maintenance, payments and who each platform suits, in one comparison.

Shopify vs WooCommerce comes down to one trade-off. Shopify is a hosted platform: you pay a monthly plan and Shopify runs the hosting, security and checkout for you. WooCommerce is a free, open-source plugin for WordPress: the software costs nothing, but you run, host and maintain the store yourself. For most Indian D2C brands with a small team, Shopify is the simpler start. For brands that already live on WordPress, need deep custom control or want to avoid platform fees, WooCommerce can be the better fit.

We build stores on both, so we don't mind which one you pick. Below is how they compare on what matters to an Indian D2C brand: cost, ease of use, control, maintenance, payments, speed and growth. If you want a recommendation for your own brand, our Shopify development and WooCommerce development teams can look at your setup and tell you which one we'd choose.

Maintenance Low Ongoing: updates, backups, security
Best for Brands that want to launch fast and focus on selling Brands on WordPress or needing full control

Cost: what you actually pay

Shopify

At the time of writing, Shopify's India pricing page (checked 2026-10-18) lists these plans:

Plan Paid yearly (per month) Paid monthly Fee with a third-party payment provider Staff accounts
Basic ₹1,499 ₹1,994 2% —
Grow ₹5,599 ₹7,447 1% Up to 5
Advanced ₹22,680 ₹30,164 0.6% Up to 15
Plus From ₹1,75,000 per month — 0.2% Unlimited

Shopify also lists a 3-day free trial, followed by ₹20 a month for the first 3 months, and no setup fees. Prices and offers change, so check the page before you budget.

On top of the plan you'll pay for a theme (free or paid), apps (many are monthly subscriptions), your payment gateway's own fees, a domain, and shipping. Our Shopify pricing in India guide breaks every line down, with a budget worksheet you can copy.

WooCommerce

The WooCommerce plugin itself is free and open source. What you pay for instead:

  • Hosting: a good managed WordPress host matters, because speed and uptime are now your problem.
  • Domain and SSL: often bundled with hosting.
  • Theme: free or premium.
  • Premium plugins: for things like advanced shipping rules, subscriptions, or filters.
  • Maintenance: someone has to update WordPress, plugins and the theme, take backups and watch security.

WooCommerce charges no platform fee on your sales, though your payment gateway's own fees still apply. The total can be lower or higher than Shopify depending on how many premium plugins you need and who maintains the site.

Ease of use

Shopify is built for people who aren't developers. Adding products, running discounts, managing orders and installing apps all happen in one clean admin, and the checkout works out of the box.

WooCommerce is comfortable if your team already uses WordPress, but there are more moving parts: WordPress, WooCommerce, the theme and every plugin each have their own settings and updates. Without someone technical on call, small problems can turn into downtime.

Control and customisation

This is where WooCommerce shines. You own the code and the database, you can change almost anything, and you can host wherever you like. If you have unusual product logic, need deep content and SEO control on a large WordPress site, or want to integrate custom systems, WooCommerce gives you room.

Shopify is highly customisable too, through themes, sections, apps and custom development, but within Shopify's structure. Some deep changes, especially to checkout, are limited on lower plans.

Maintenance and security

On Shopify, hosting, security patches and checkout uptime are handled for you. You still need to manage apps carefully, but you won't be patching servers.

On WooCommerce, maintenance is ongoing work: core, plugin and theme updates, backups, malware scans and server monitoring. Skipping it is how WordPress sites get hacked. Budget for it, either in-house or with a partner. Our WooCommerce development service includes ongoing maintenance for exactly this reason.

Payments in India

Both platforms work with Indian payment gateways, so UPI, cards, net banking, wallets and cash on delivery are all possible on either.

The difference is the platform fee. On Shopify, using a third-party payment provider adds the plan's transaction fee (2% on Basic at the time of writing, falling on higher plans) on top of the gateway's own charges. On WooCommerce, there's no platform fee; you pay only the gateway. At higher order volumes this difference adds up, so run the numbers against your expected monthly sales.

Speed and performance

A Shopify store is usually fast by default, because hosting and the checkout are optimised by Shopify. Speed problems mostly come from heavy themes, too many apps and large images.

A WooCommerce store can be very fast or very slow. It depends on the hosting, the theme, caching and how many plugins are installed. With good hosting and careful setup it performs well; on cheap shared hosting with dozens of plugins, it struggles.

Either way, speed directly affects sales. If your store already gets traffic but few orders, read No Sales on Shopify? 15 Fixes to Check First. Most of the fixes apply to WooCommerce too.

Apps, plugins and integrations

Both have large ecosystems. Shopify's app store is curated and installs in a click, but most useful apps are monthly subscriptions, often billed in USD. WordPress has a huge plugin library, many of them free, but quality varies and every plugin is one more thing to update and secure.

For India-specific needs (COD verification, shipping aggregators, WhatsApp notifications, GST invoices), both platforms have options. Check that the specific integrations you need exist and are actively maintained before you choose.

Growing and scaling

Shopify scales without you thinking about servers: a sale-day traffic spike is Shopify's problem. As you grow, higher plans lower the transaction fee and add features such as more staff accounts.

WooCommerce can scale well too, but scaling is your job: better hosting, caching, database optimisation and sometimes developer time. Brands with an in-house tech team are often comfortable with this; brands without one usually aren't.

Which one should you choose?

If you... Choose
Want to launch quickly with a small, non-technical team Shopify
Don't want to manage hosting, security or updates Shopify
Expect sale-day traffic spikes and want them handled for you Shopify
Already have a WordPress site with content that ranks WooCommerce
Need deep custom logic or full ownership of the code and data WooCommerce
Have high order volumes and want to avoid platform fees WooCommerce (run the numbers)
Have a developer or partner for ongoing maintenance Either works

For fashion and clothing brands with large catalogues, variants and frequent drops, both can work; the deciding factor is usually your team. Our clothing industry page covers what those stores need beyond the platform.

FAQs

Is Shopify or WooCommerce cheaper in India?

It depends. Shopify has a predictable monthly plan plus app costs and, with third-party payment providers, a transaction fee. WooCommerce's software is free, but you pay for hosting, premium plugins and maintenance. Compare the full yearly cost for your expected order volume.

Can I accept UPI and COD on both platforms?

Yes. Both work with Indian payment gateways that support UPI, cards, net banking and wallets, and both can offer cash on delivery.

Which is better for SEO?

Both can rank well. WooCommerce on WordPress gives more control over content and technical SEO, which helps content-heavy sites. Shopify handles the basics well and is easier to keep fast. Good content and a fast store matter more than the platform.

Can I move from WooCommerce to Shopify later, or the other way round?

Yes. Products, customers and orders can be migrated, and old URLs should be redirected to keep search traffic. Plan the migration carefully and test it before switching.

Do you build on both platforms?

Yes. GrooveNexus Studios builds and improves both Shopify and WooCommerce stores, and we recommend whichever fits your team, budget and plans.
